Views by staff on falls and injury prevention in long term care

A recent qualitative trial by Williams et al. has highlighted both misperceived fall-related (restraint) policies and a lack of awareness of clinically important falls prevention research amongst staff in long term care settings.

The Canadian group held 11 focus groups and 28 interviews.  One major issue raised was that the understanding that greater supervision, monitoring and walking practice were essential but that a lack of staffing made this impossible to implement.  Indeed one quote says it all “My wish list is for a physio aide to work under the direction of a physiotherapist and she would give exercises, set up programs and…make sure that the ones that need to be walked more would be walked …
